Guestthanks 🙂
shall dig out some pics of my labs.
and regarding my age, i know i’m only 18 but i have worked hard, love what i do and have a fab trainer who i work for. you never stop learning, no matter how old you are. clients and doggies are always happy 🙂
anyone else recently took an a.p.d.t assessment?
🙂August 1, 2008 at 4:20 pm #104783kizkiznobite
Memberi understand all of that..really i do…but….it takes more than..it takes much more than a apdt assessment to be able to train other peoples dogs and to my mind they have it back to front…it a huge responsibilty…your decisions could mean the difference between a rehome a pts a number of things…are you really ready for that?
have you as yet been bitten in the backside…the calf…the hand…the face…have you then been able to excuse it, assess it, repair it?
what operant conditioning methods are you using for training….at what age of dog are you advising this….what experience do you have of classical conditioning in the young or adult dog….what do you know first hand of extinction…..
i admire your enthusiasm…i really do…all the young folk on this board will know i really mean that but being accepted as a member of this org at this age with limited exp. scares me…it really does…both for you and the dogs and their owners…as i said…you ever want help …then contact me…

MemberHmm yeah, i’ve never really thought about that, but i suppose its better to have the backing of APDT than people i know who offer training advice without having a clue ::)

Guestjust passed my a.p.d.t assessment!
Well done! What do you have to do for that?
I’ve never understood the APDT after reading on their site that
“Membership in the Association is open to all who pay annual dues and includes individuals with a wide range of experience, knowledge, and skill.”
and
“nor does the Association set standards of skill or competence. “
and
“We refer, but do not endorse, members listed in our membership directory”I always thought that membership meant a guarantee of quality but it would appear that if you pays for money, anyone can join! 🙁

Memberwell reading that just throws it all out the window ::)

Memberactually no fox…i disagree…it gives a false sense of aptitude to the buyer and security to the trainer…..

Guestno not at all, the assessment involves 3 parts. written, class taking and an interview/oral assessment. they do assess people on skill, knowlage and competance. if not enough is shown, they will not pass you. they also make sure trainers use kind, fair and effective methods which i believe is very important. they also check a trainer is able to demonstrate more than one way to teach each exercise and also assesses them on their people skills, again very important. we are also required to show we can deal with unexpected or difficult situations and be aware on how to prevent them. they don’t just accept anyone and everyone.
