Memberstans jabs are due in april and after reading so many horror stories in the past year im not sure weather to do the boosters or not, so…… im after pros & cons, whats in the jabs, possible side effects. everything you can think of so that i can do an informed desition rather than being bullied by the vets ;D

What sort of environment is he exposed to?
What if any insurance cover do you have?
will the insurance cover for any diseases that could have been prevented by vaccinations?
Do you enter KC licensed events?
Do you attend KC registered clubs?
Do you kennel your dog at all?

Kerrie – i would think your main risk would be from your kennel volunteering or if you have seals landing on the beach. aside from that your community is so restricted that probably protects you a little as many tourists coming with dogs will have had to vacc them to stay in accomodation.
If he’s a generally calm boy – what about finding out how much titres are for him ? You might find that he’s already got protection from previous boosters as its only a year ago you had him done ?
Also – sweetypye – i see my vets are now offering a killed vaccine in place of MLV’s are these safer and do they still have the same probs (like autoimmune stuff etc ….) I have 1 dog who previously had mild MLV reactions twice and another who hasnt been boosted for 3yrs now and am wondering if killed are safe(er) ??

February 11, 2009 at 5:45 pm #86139Memberat the moment im not helping at the rescue (still fundraising though) as i fell very heavy and banged my knee so im having physio for it.
ive not heard of any seals on the beachs although we do have the odd dolphin but they are ussually further south
stans not to bad taking blood so i might look into that, what are titres? and yes it was last year he had his booster and the year before was his first jabs so this will be his second booster.
whats the differance between a “killed” and MlV? what is MLV?sorry for all the questions but i want to make sure im doing the right thing

Best of my knowledge its only seals – dolphins are ok 🙂
very simply – killed is “dead” and MLV stands for modified live virus so is “alive” 🙂
I believe some vaccinosis is due to the live vaccine – i seem to remember live vaccines are a tiny bit of “working” disease whereas killed ones are disabled but the body still learns them – not as tough on immune – got to run and get Harry xxxx

is that with the MDA? if so very confused now ??? 😀
DOI after vaccination with MLV vaccines is 7 years or longer, based on challenge and serological studies.
so no boosters every year?
In geographical areas or isolation facilities where CPV-2 is not endemic in domestic or wild susceptible species, MLV vaccines should not be used as the virus will be shed and could potentially revert to virulence as well as infect other individuals or other species.
that doesnt sound good?

Memberneither of ours are vaccinated personal choice and dont see a need to – that and neither are fit enough physically to take them.

Memberwas talkign about this with the vet tonight.. he said that he prefers to titre test 🙂
