It is a problem with the immune system where basically it starts rejecting bits of her skin.  Her nails have been affected because the skin in the nail bed is being rejected along with her pads.  Sores can break out on the dogs skin aswell – although Loki is showing no signs of this.
It can never be cured although you can hope to keep it in remission.
A friend of mine managed with care to get her Akita to 9 yrs old and she had the same condition so i’m hoping we will have many years left yet as my girl is only 3 1/2 yrs old.
