GuestIf he comes back why do you need the ball ??? retreive is one of the hardest things to teach pastorals excluding the BC.
I bet you have thrown it and he’s brought it back a few times now he’s saying You threw it you get it ;D
They don’t like to do repetitive things

Thank you Kerrie, Suz and Zerlinda 🙂I have a quick question for anyone, on getting him to leave my side, sometimes I throw the tennis ball, he runs to it, but then recalls himself (without the tennis ball), I then start calling him so he hopefully connects it more with being called, but Im not sure if he’ll see it as being rewared for not bringing the ball back or for coming back when called – if that makes any sense at all ???
Without the ball if he goes off sniffing and I call him back he still recalls everytime.

MemberOh Im not too bothered, the ball is just to get him far enough from me to actually recall, he doesnt leave my side, I am re-inforcing a release when he does go ahead but he hasnt caught on yet 😉

GuestHe called tri-colour?
He called blue merle. 🙂 Tri is mainly black, with tan cheeks and eye brows with typical white collie markings.

Tam is classed as sable/white, he is what they call a shaded sable or mahogany sable because of the coat being darker as he gets older. Someone asked me once if he was going to be a tri colour when he grows up, he was 8 at the time ;DNovember 21, 2008 at 9:44 am #102380Anonymous
Guesthe’s gorgeous ;D
Out of interest – how are they different in temprament to a rough? Our family dog when growing up was a rough collie and she was a superstar – I think she was pretty much trained as soon as we got her (With very little help from us :-[ ) as Shelties like that too?

Well :-\ …. i should have been able to remember even just a little. See 13 years ago my -than- wife to be told me she was going to buy me puppy for weddingpresent. Thought it would be a sheltie, so started to do research until she said was no need. I would know. We would just go see the breeder that she sought out………. It was Groenendaeler breeder. Little time later i picked Wodan 😉 .For some reason sheltie never left my mind though. They look much like mini Groenendaeler in colour. If only the character was exactly the same my hands would itch soooo much to search for 1. 😉

[/quote]From what I have seen the rough is more laid back than the sheltie, most shelties I know are busy dogs and can be yappy. They are very bright and excel at obedience, agility and HWTM, they can be very greedy which tends to make them easy to train. They are very good family dogs.

I agree completely but wanted you to say it as you live with both. ;D
Roughs make a big fuss when you come in and then lie down quietly. All the Shelties that I’ve met are busy as Lassie says, always wanting to know what’s going on, so they are very different in temperament, which is why I didn’t choose a Sheltie when I was looking to downsize my breed. I find them under my feet all time and not so easy to live with – a bit like Affenpinschers! 😉 😀

Shelties can be very nosy too 😉November 21, 2008 at 8:26 pm #102387*jody*
MemberJake is definately nosy! I turn around and he is there, very inquisitive but not in a clingy has-to-be-by-my-side way as I can shut him behind a stairgate and he doesnt kick up a fuss.
So far Jake hasnt been particulary noisy, Dante still wins with that one and he is definately the most vocal of the two.
