no – he has been having bach flower rescue remedy tho.  neither that or the valerian + skullcap as touched him.  to be honest i think you could give him a ACP and he would be able to fight it off to bark.  Not joking!!

Poor William.. he sounds distressed bless him  :'(
Fritz hated being cooped up behind the baby gate in the kitchen and probably would have done exactly what you William does had we not learned to trust him with free reign… he all fine now  :yes: it is very rare that we even see him at the window on our return.. if we do it’s cause we been out more than 3 hours which we try not to do

Hi,

Today I have had enough – there is some point where you have to draw a line and say no more.  The dogs arent happy, I’m not happy, it cannot go on and Bev cant help with behaviour stuff and I am really not sure sedating him would be any better.  I am going to be looking into re-homing Bonnie in the new year to a home where she gets out more as she loves hunting, unless I can find a home for William that I wouldnt just be passing on this problem then he’ll be put to sleep.

So there we go.

Hi Nick,

I cannot find one which would suit is my honest answer !!

There are 2 main problems –

1 – operation
most are set off by noise and are very likely to be set off by either dog.  Ones which are not have to be worn as a collar which can then cause the dog to associate the “bad things” with the collar and not the bark!

2 – type :

air/citronella and electric shock – these work on “the dog” directly so would be OK to use in multi-dog households (and suffer from above mentioned problem) but I would rather rehome or put him down than use a shock collar and I think he’d just empty a cannister type collar and that’d be rewarding for barking lotsnadlotsandlots.

audible and unaudible devices – these are usually “in the room” as opposed to on the dog but there is no way of them distinguishing Bonnie’s from William’s from any other dogs bark.

I have been looking at all sorts of things – the only thing I found which may work but I have tried similar things is a calming inaudible music thingy but its currently unavailable for months as a shipment is on its way from god knows where lol !!

One of the main problems is that I need someone here to sort out exactly what is causing the barking.

e.g. yesterday – left 20mins all quiet, today left 3 hours and BOTH dogs barked (Bonnie doesnt usually) and started barking well before 20mins.

Either they are super clever and know that if I am going out with Harry in the morning we’ll be gone longer – or they think they can bark their little heads off in the morning and not the afternoon – to be honest f*** knows – right now I wish someone would just come and take them I am that exhausted with it all.

Seems a bit drastic Claire, is there no one who could take them for a short while while you get de-stressed.
Surely as both were rescues then you have to contact them before putting William to sleep ???

Some people say the Insecurity essence is better than the Bach flower ones, think I would try that before destroying the dog.

He’s not nervous, undersocialised or suffering from physical or mental abuse tho … just f***ing barking !!

Even if they could fit him in (which I doubt) … is it really fair to put a 10+ year old dog into cold kennels where he will bark himself till exhausted every single day ?  …. and for what ?  even in the infitessimally small chance that he’d get someone interested they would have to live in the middle of nowhere else face the same problems.

Even if I had somewhere for them to go (which I dont anyway) – I barely have any friends – as you can probably imagine lol !!  I can assure you none of them would want sir bark-a-lot or little-miss-snaffle-bum … especially not at xmas lol !!  Besides – it wont stop the stress I’ll just get them back and then it’ll start again.

This isnt a scared dog or a nervy dog or an anxious dog – its a barky one.  He barked like his life depended on it before I had him lol !!

Bev has already said he beyond the realms of help !!!!

what you need to do is take Cleo for a few weeks – she cant abide noise and stressing at all and you soon get told about it

its the only reason i can mange 4 really working type dogs who are having minimal exercise at the moment in theory they should be climbing the walls but in reality they are all chilling

i dont know who to turn to, what i’m doing wrong or why I cant fix him like I have so many others.  what i need is bev to come and stay but its too much to ask as she’s so tied up with her own things.

oh mine chill as long as i’m here and they’re with me 🙂

and nah – bonnie dont like noise either she tells him off but it dont work from inside a crate lol !!

Getting Bonnie rehomed seems like an incredibly drastic move. I know your stressed but trouble is hun that isnt helping.

What happens if you leave Bonnie and Wills loose in the house while your out?

All, I can say is I would exhaust every avenue available to me before I would even consider pts.
There have been times in my life when circumstances didn’t allow me to have a dog, there was a time when I had to let my Wyatt live with my parents until I got my act together.

If my choices were to try a bark collar or even an e-collar to solve a problem then i wouldn’t hesitate to do it.  This will probably get me crucified but there it is.

if i leave them loose and nothing happens outside they’re quiet little mice – if not they go nuts and i get big hasstle threats and gobby shite from next doors london biatch of a daughter whenever they’re next up here and her london bloke thinkin he’s all ard n wiw dek uz.  Oh and if I’m not 110% and remove every mildly organic substance from the lounge and dining room she’ll eat it and be sick again (she had a WHOLE BAG of foxes glacier fruits a couple of weeks ago – c*w … 2 mins I left them.  Its not like they even bloody smell !!!!!  Wrappers and all.  She’s a constant frigging arse pain.  If shes not doing that shes whining at the TV because theres some bloody animal on or barking at something random outside or barking at lily next door or barking to shut william up from barking at something random outside.

my parents dont let them in the house nick !!  ur lucky !

Nick – if Bev doesnt think positive training will work … why would negative training work any better ??

Suz – Even if Bev does comes I have to think about sedating him before we do any work.  Then I am into whether I want to put him through that as there are risks there too – he could get more distressed and there are side effects plus long term use on an old dog ….

I’m totally trapped no-one wants to come round and I cant go out because of gobby git wills.  Bonnie would be OK i’d have to let her go as she isnt an “only dog” I know who I would like to have her but not sure they’d cope which is a bugger.

Then theres Harry who will be just devastated he still asks me where mist went – he asked if she was coming back because she sent a xmas card to us.

I’m tired of it all, I just dont want to come home 1 more single time and have the sickening feeling looking at the audio trace and seeing William has barked until he’s literally worn out.  Its totally and completely dispairing.

there was a ‘change’ …and wills has had a classical conditioning episode that has now moved on a stimulas that has created a conditioned response…the only thing is to go back to basics and re condition the crate to be a good place to be and to do the in out in out etc..have you started feeding him in there yet?…also i think you need to get a vet check and discuss using amitriptiline….hang on until after the new year claire and i will come and stay over …
