MemberThanks Claire, on leaving things plugged in, it not just a fad for me! I turn off the TV etc by the wall before I go out, even for five minutes, check the oven is switched off about 100 times, a bit of mild OCD I think! But I think we could manage that as I leave a little night light on in the passage overnight now!

Guestjust a thought…sometimes dogs bark when their routine or environment changes, even if its only slightly changed. they bark because they are unsure, un settled or feel threatened. i have seen cases of this particualy in dogs that have been rehomed. however barking also gains attention from owner so a dog that may originaly barked through fear, uncertainty etc may have cottened on to the fact that it resulted in lots of attention from owner. even negative attention- its all still attention. therefore the dog is likely to repeat the behaviour (barking) in order to gain attention. the best way to solve this is to ingore or distract the dog. and give lots of fuss/treats when he is quiet. 🙂

When Bev was over / before Bev, Gracie did alot of alert barking that i ignored. Bev said to acknowledge it, by just stroking the back of your hand down cheek, and saying thank you its ok or something to that effect… as she is doing her job, she is raising the alarm for the pack leader to check out. she quiets quite quickly when i say from across the thank you it ok! as i guess she feels she has done her job! till the next noise ::)
[/quote]Sadie goes to the front window to bark at passing dogs or people or whatever she thinks is a problem…it isn’t really significant but I was looking for a way to stop it….then I read Gracies post last month I thought I’d give it a try. Well, I do exactly what is suggested, I go over to her very calmly , give her a stroke on the head tell her ‘good girl, thank you’ and she stops immediately! She’ll then come trotting very proudly into the living room and lay down. For dogs like Sadie and Gracie, this is brilliant advice and not something one would think of as it seems like reinforcement but it works a charm. Thanks to bev and gracie :-*

GuestHi,
Nick – you are re-inforcing the GOOD settled behaviour by calming her off “alert mode” and rewarding
LMM – is talking about re-inforcing the BAD barkie behaviour by “barking back” or offering other faffing about attention
and yep – works with my dogs too …. BOTH sorts !!

Memberyep…a trainer needs to assess and be able to understand difference 😉

Guestfor anyone else out there struggling with the difference – you might like to know that its one of the things i’ve found most difficult out of all the training and managing i’ve learned – and i had bev there going look NOW is the barking and NOW is the correct sort ::)
you “get it” in the end tho its easier with a dog you know well in terms of their behaviour (ie: i got it with Bonnie far easier than Wills)

Memberi have to say the post by LLM makes sense doesnt it? ignore bad behaviour and reward good? thats the basic principle.
