Ok… so morning all, first question of the day!  :sleepy:

    Doug and his ears.

He has always seemed to suffer from ear infections, back in the UK he was in the vets at least once every 12 weeks. Normally more, i kept asking them if there was any casue for concern as he seemed to be getting alot of ear infections, but no nothing too worrying they told me. You just have a spaniel.

I dont feed him beef (Thanks Bev!)  😉 and i clean his ears out with a cleaner the vets give me. usually the same one but if i run out then its doggie wipes. But… since coming out here he is shaking his head alot, i took him to his new vets the other day who were recommended to me, and after a big inspection told me that she thinks he has an allergy. She looked at his feet and said in between his toes and red and “cheesy”  :-\ and that she thinks this is what is causing the ears. She then totally frightened me by saying that his ears were not clean right at the bottom and if left will turn to Cancur and could go to his brain. Ok so i went into panic mode!!!  :what: :help: She asked what i feed him. (I still feed him the same food Bev… boiled chicken veg etc…) and she said to lay off this and change his diet to a hypoallergenic diet. She gave me some Royal Canin biscuit and said to feed him only this and to bring him back to see how he gets on. Now… im not a vet but i im not happy. Ive never been a fan of tin/packet food since Auntie Bev gave me the lowdown. But i dont know what to do best for the rascal.

Its not cheap. equivalent to £50 for a bag of biscuit. Where as a whole chicken here is £1!!!!! Not the money but obviously i dont want to be forking out for something which is naff.

Any thoughts on Ear infections, allergies, cancur (whatever it is) and food?….

    Thank you pet people!  :-*

dump the food….stick to his normal diet…this is the classic long eared swimming dog problem….every clumber gets this if it not kept on top off…

there is loads on here about this problem…..it is ear mites that kick in in the nice warm damp hairy lugs…

    this is what you do:
boost immune system to keep the mite count low
clean ears with something like vals ear cleaner….never had a problem with my lot since i started using that….you can buy a similar mix ready done called quistel ear cleaner….you may have probs getting the ingredients out there…quistel is almost as good as, a bit weaker and a bit pricey…so make your own if you can
trim inside ears…the idea is to get as much air in as possible
get some ‘thorn it’ powder and rub it on the insidde of the leathers to strip out the small hairs
when he has been swimming dry out his ears
when you have sorted him out….before he goes swimming rub the inside of the leathers with an oil..i use almond oil that has had a vit e capsule stirred in it

    what you dont do
    not give anti bi’s
    not give steroids
not use the antifungal anti bi ear cleaner from vets
not give any commercial animal products…like treats of hide…animal deriratives etc

have a look around the board….vals recipe is in the stickies

    Thanks Bev

I will get my mum to buy it in the UK, she is flyingo ut here on Thursday i’ll get her to stock up. I noticed it has alcohol in it, so yes i wont be able to get it here unfortunately.

I’ve just been on the Quistel site. There are a few different ones, Ear Cleaner and Earl cleaner?!?! what the hell is an earl? !!!  :-[

i’ll get her to bring a couple of them for me. Is there anything else i can get for him I’ll ask her to bring Thorn it too…

He has just been groomed so all his ears are nice and short, so thats one good thing.

Guess its time to ditch the drops she sold me then…

    ps

clumbers do have ‘red cheesy feet….’

as in the skin is naturally pinkish.brownsish…the pads are pinkish spotted brownish…the fur between is often a darker hue of the ‘lemon’ coat and is often pinkish brownish and it stains easy…when we come from beach they have stained feet,,,and as dogs ‘sweat’ through the feet then they smell what some would think of as cheesy….

i prefer to think of them as pinky platters that smell yummy….

think your vet needs a clumber info book…

if he is chewing at his feet then yes …he may have some ear mites there but that looks lots different than normal pinky feet….

as for the grooming…it the inside of the ears that need stripping out of hair…so check your groomer has done that

Yeah thats what i thought, his feet have always looked the same really. and no he doesnt chew them, he licks his paws and lower legs though… to clean them?…

so which cleaner shall i tell ehr to get just the normal ear cleaner or this earl stuff?… whatever that may be?…

They did trim inside his ears but i’ll have another look tonight to inspect.

    Right then… thats him sorted!

    Thank you again!! xx 8)

you know the bit that you can see on the bottom of the jaw line if you lift up the flews…it pinky brownish reddish …sort of fluffy mixed with floppy skin… ::) lord struggling to describe it…bet the groomers have a special term for it  ;D…anyway…between his toes will be similar to that….and his feet and legs will only go surface pink if he over licking….it the iron oxides that get exposed to the air when reacting with the slobber…if he not got that he fine he just cleaning himself….yucky feet are different…they chew at them and they go raw loooking….and tell your groomer to only use scissors on the feet …not a clipper…

havnt a clue re earl….i buy the ingredients and mix my own up….can your mum do that…think you can only buy quistel on line….all i know is it the quistel ear cleaner it purpleish and it comes with a shringe….quistel also will have the alch. in it…do they allow medicnal products with alch. in to come into the country?

Excellent! thats the one, i’ll get ordering.
How would i make my own? you can buy alcohol here and bring it into the country duty free etc so im sure it will be fine, its just they dont tend to sell alcohol products you need to have a licence to buy alcohol in a special shop… anyway i wont go oh! basically nothing with booze in!

Yep that sounds like his feet, she seemed quite concerned but his tootsies have always looked like that. pinkish and the fur is brownish…

when you say boost the immune system any ideas? xxx
