bit confused re the lack of B vits dree. :-\ chappie has vits added anyway (but meat has B6)…mineral content isnt bad…the quality of the protein would be my concern…parsonmum….if i understand you correctly you also give spinach and fish in oil yes? so then he would be getting B12 from the fish, B6 from the meat in the chappie and both from the spinach
According to the posts, parsonmum was feeding lamb bones, cooked chicken, veggies and brown rice. Cooked chicken is the main meat source here, and contains only (per 100g) 0.05mg Thiamin, 0.33mg B6 and a trace of B12. In dark chicken the figures are 0.07mg Thiamin, 0.37mg B6 and 1.00 B12 (ugs). Brown rice contains no B vits, but is high in Phos, and supplies only 0.7mg per 100g of zinc, 43mg of Mag, and only 0.9 of Manganese.
One tin of sardines will give 28ugs B12 per 100g. One raw egg supplies 0.12mg B6 per 100g and 2.5ug’s B12 per 100g.
All in all, the diet, imo, is lacking (as I said) in B vits. But it is also lacking elsewhere, and it is also unbalanced. With just lamb bones 3 – 4 times per week, the calc:phos (and mag) ratio is wrong, since brown rice is high in phos and low in calcium, as is cooked chicken. The chicken is supplying 28 – 29% protein, but, yes, the brown rice provides very little, as do the vegetables.
If changed to a raw diet, the calc:phos (and mag) balance will be corrected. The addition of some ox liver will provide 110ug’s per 100g of B12. But the Vit B’s are only a small part of the picture.

Dree no offence but been there done it – ive read and talked skin till im sick of it.Believe me i KNOW how skin works and exactly how food can affect it 🙂 I still dont think the problem is JUST food. Its probably contributing not disputing that – but fleas are rife right now and making dogs lives a misery everywhere.
It may not be *just* food, but we are what we eat. Fleas might be a problem, but not one of my dogs has them, and I don’t use anything topical to stop them. A good diet (and no vaccs) produces a high immune system, and that’s what we should all be aiming for, imo.

MemberDree im sorry but – you telling me stuff i know already……..have chatted to this dogs owner before, know his history – still 100% convinced FLEAS are the base of the problem not food.
I KNOW a good diet and no vaccs contributes to a healthier dog – please read some of my earlier posts, it explains exactly what ive been through re diet and vaccinations.
Why are you adding toxins to a dog who’s system is already suffering?? 😮 Sounds like you need to use sulphur baths and the homeopathic sulphur nosode. And change the diet!!!
October 13, 2008 at 11:16 pm #83423parsonsmum
MemberI have bathed him in a coal tar and sulphur dog shampoo. I hear you about the diet 😉
His skin is not broken at the moment…just very red and he’s pulling the hair out, so a few bald patches. I’m keeping a close eye on him but I don’t think he needs ABs as there is no sign of infection :-\Lassie, thank you for those links. From reading the 1st link,it does sound like Doug has a flea allergy 🙁

Memberok hun …chill a little…what’s done is done and i understand from your previous post that you frontlined in panic etc…
if this was me…and been here many times with rescues…i would detox 3 to 5 days…then i would start to improve the diet…no more bathing…go for topical repair and at the same time work from inside out..
so…you need to give a bland diet for a few days but plenty of fluids …goats milk and water if they not good drinkers….and pre and pro biotics…if you can get yoghurt with inulin in that would be good…add a banana…get some vit e capsules and break them open…put the oil in the palm of the hand and massage into the skin…add some aloe vera to the water and get some down the throat too and also give some manuka honey….
i would be giving sea kelp and immune boosters like vit e and selenium
it may well be that you will need to add some zinc as they not great fruit eaters but my advise is go with this for 5 days and then report back
xx
