    Hi!
Both dogs have been on a plain diet of boiled chicken and brown rice for the last 4 days. I’ve added either apples/pears/bananas together with selenium, Vit E,sea kelp and garlic with fenugreek. Also given live bio yogurt and yog drinks with inulin, and added some aloe juice to the drinking water.
I’ve made up a cream with aqueous cream/lavender oil/tea-tree oil thornits and Vit E oil. This has definately calmed the skin…..and Doug does’nt lick it off!
BUT….Doug is still scratching, has quite a large bald area on his tail and a new patch on his leg. I’ve taken some pics of the problem areas…..

Have you taken him to the vet to get some skin scrapes done to find out what the allergy is?  If it was my dog I would be at the vet as soon as possible.

I’m not the authority on this, but just my two pennorth, Toby’s baldness took a long time for the hair to grow back and for the redness to go down, don’t worry about the unsightlyness but do watch the scratching behaviours, it may be slowing down and improving but will take a while for the skin to start showing it, sure others can help, it’s just that I wish I didn’t run to the vets as quickly as I did, was very expensive and the scrape showed nothing, if demodex etc Bev ad Val would see from the pics, same with ringworm I think, hope he starts feeling better soon poor man, I know how frustrating it can be  :'( :-*

Thanks Angela…..yeah, his skin is’nt as red and angry looking and the hair is starting to grow back on some patches….except for the patch on his leg, which is his “new nibble”. I don’t think he is scratching quite so much…..but when he starts, he scratches for an hour or so :-\ He’s been quiet this evening, so maybe he is getting better. The cream must help ‘cos when he sees the pot, he comes straight to me and just sits waiting for me to put it on him.
I’m hoping I can avoid the vet…..past experiences  ::)…..and apart from this damn itch he seems perfectly fit and healthy in every other way.
I am keeping a close eye to make sure there’s no infection….so far so good.

this was Gracie last year, it stared as 1st picture and got worse as you can see, we did skin scrapes, antibios(Vets) blood tests, food elimination diets, topical treatment the lot, – we even booked an appointment with a doggie dermotologist, what cleared it up was we put a buster collar on her to stop her chewing, anti hist when really bad and treated topically to sooth the itching, soon cleared up, and didnt come back till this summer, but not as bad as the 1st few bites we treated topicall anti hist and buster collar if she started chewing. I guess with that and her immune system is up this year. – We think it is/was ant / insect bites.

just to add the skin scrapes just ruled out what angela said – it was the doggie dermo that would have found out what she was allergic too, at i think the cost of £150 to walk in the door  :-\ (it cleared up tho before the appointment came round so cancelled)

God, I had no idea poor Gracie had had it this bad, it looks sooooo sore poor lass, I definately agree that you can go down long and expensive roads with this, I would never put money in the way of a happy healthy dog but would just hold off a little.  Hope little Doug feels better soon, would love to see some pics of your two parsonsmum, are there others on here?

Problem with skin is whatever the cause dogs get what is called the itch scratch syndrome so it makes a circle of the whole problem Gracie had her’s broken by the buster collar once she stopped scatching it, it had time to heal.
Saw a brilliant site the other day for collars that were not as dangerous as the busters will see if I can find it later
Most skin problems are either flea or food, fleas are easy food takes a little longer  :ok:

Great thats the ones have heard great reports on them someone on another list put up the link but I do remember a collie that ran flat out and broke a leg in a rabbit hole that had one as she was terrified by the noise the bucket was making when she was chipping lumps out of her owners paintwork.
The reason she had to wear it was she was ripping her plaster cast off  ;D

Oh poor Gracie it must have driven her mad :'( I did see those pics the other day ‘cos I’ve been scouring all the threads relating to skin problems ::) Thank goodness you seem to know the cause now and can act quickly to help her.
Val those collars look good 🙂 I’ve held off the lampshade collar as Doug goes absolutely mad when he sees it :-\ But think he’ll have to try it to see if we can break the itch/scratch cycle, but will be looking into getting one of those inflatable ones.

hmmm them collars look good, and prob about the same if not less than buster ones from the vets.
we never take gracie out on walks with the collar on and dont leave her in the house alone with one on, but the do bloody hurt when the catch in the back of the legs – i swear sometimes she just comes and bashes us with it out of spite.

you can also do the rolled up towel, might be worth doing that parsons mum rather than splashing out on the collar in case its not the solution in your case.

anyone fancy putting a pic up of the dog in a towel collar, always wondered how that worked!
