Ya, I’m not sure about that. That’s why i listed it under possibles. I think in America they’ve dropped the ‘spaniel’
The Kooiker is also known as the Dutch Decoy Spaniel but I don’t know if that makes it officially a spaniel ???

this says six of the eight SPORTING spaniel breeds originated in britain. so maybe that was the eight.
cos the bluepic and brittany are called spaniels but are HPRs aren’t they? and the cav etc are toys.
i am presuming the british sporting ones are cocker, eng springer, welsh springer, clumber, sussex and field, and that the irish water is counted as another – from ireland. not sure about 8th though. american water???
Very true Suz, but I think when most people think spaniel they think Cocker, so there are a lot of dogs on that list that don’t look like spaniels. Almost everyone thinks Sadie is some sort of Setter.
The functional designation of each dog doesn’t matter, a spaniel can be a flusher, a pointer, an HPR, a toy etc
I think they list the American Cocker as the 8th. If the American Cocker is a sporting dog then I’m a Tour de France winner 😉July 19, 2008 at 7:55 pm #67535GSPmad
well exactly – assuming you haven’t won the tour de france. 😀
that’s why i thought maybe american water. :-\ i know the am cocker is in the gundog group here but to me it’s a toy – surely they would get hung up in brambles and bracken with that coat. :-\

German spaniel or deutscher wachtelhund
Hmm, not sure about that one either. I’ll put it in the possibles. Good one Foxy! Thanks! 8)
quote :The Germans classify the Wachtelhund as a Stoberhund, hund meaning — dog. In English stober translates to — to rummage about (if you think about it most dogs started hunting in this manner.) The Germans classify all other flushers as Spaniels and separate from the Stober dog category. The Wachtelhund is the last of the Stobers
