    Hi

I was told that a tablespoon of spinach a day (pureed from fresh or defrosted from frozen nuggets) is good for itchiness.. but I have read conflicting advice – the alternative vet says it is ok to give but that she has not had much success with it. I have also read it is also a member of the nightshade family. Does it need to be cooked then? I think the frozen nuggets are already cooked and you just end up defrosting and heating them up.  Also it can cause thyroid problems?  It gives Woody wind anyway, that is for sure (just one nugget a day)

Woody is currently undergoing desensitisation therapy for dust mite/orchard grass allergy (mainstream vet) and an alternative vet has put him on 2 tablespoons of aloe vera (forever liviing brand) and homeopathy. In addition, from the mainstream vet, he has three squirts of omega 3 and 6 (from a sealed container so no oxidation) each day.

I cannot remember if spinach is a member of the nightshade family or not off hand; it is cruciferous vegetables that can by thyroid inhibitors (but you would have to eat a lot) and nightshades are generally to be avoided if you have arthritis.

There is no need for it to be cooked, you can get something like Easygreen from Dorwest that contains spinach.

The problem with spinach is it contains oxalates so any dog with certain types of bladder stones should avoid it!

Vitamin C is a natural antihistamine which might help.  Desensitisation works on some dogs not all.

many thanks indeed. I have looked up the dorwest product and it also contains vit c – so that should cover all bases (spinach, vit c). Is that ok do you think? I understand about the desensitisation programme.. we just have to wait and see after many months but it’s not too bad to administer at all.

Give it a bash, it is certainlyh more convenient than defrosting or cooking the stuff!
