full of the joys of spring suz?

have met alot of dogs since going to the park with izzie, but no entire girls.

he is starting to drag me when he sees a dog in the distance now (had me on my backside yesterday),he doesnt hear me or feel me on the other end of the lead. have i taken it too far too quickly, again? i have not let him greet every dog but most and not play with some of those he does greet, but most.

he is also crouch walking like a collie towards them. he is constantly scanning the area for dogs, so the only time he is now off lead is when hes playing. i did start to let him off to do some practise at the rec, but as hes looking around for dogs i know he’ll be off if he saw one. so the only place we are practising is in the garden.

hhmmmm, 4 steps back i feel.

    i am so contradictory  :blindfold:

since seeing izzie jess and trixie, i have found some dogfull areas locally 😀 and have the confidence to get on with it, thanks izzie  ;D

his greeting is up and down but definitely getting better, really depends on alot of things.

yesterday i went to a place that looked like a small rec but turned out it had a massive fallow field attached to it. while in the rec part a little spaniel came running up to say hello, max pulled a bit but waited for her to get to him then she stood still while he sniffed her even lifting her leg to let him smell underneath. he was not heavy handed with her. when she went back to owner, he didnt fuss it but walked away fine.  bearing in mind he was hyped as he’ not been here before i was pleased.

got onto the field and saw spaniel with another spaniel in the far distance, so after doing some practice with him told him on you go. did recalls wait etc all going good but i was nervous of a dog appearing from nowhere as i didnt know this place.

the spaniels reappeared quite abit closer but still a distance and max thought it was worth a shot and went. pipped him (i had remembered my whistle lol) and thought he ignored/gone deaf, but he came back!! he might have thought it was too far or the fact that there was a ditch looming up i dont know. not sure he even knew it was a ditch.

i got the balloons out i can tell you.

had to recall again as we ended up walking paralell with them ahead and over 200ft away, he did it again and he recalled again  ;D he was pretty tired by then so perhaps he thought it was nt worth it.

am trying to drum in the keep by like bev showed me so i can use it to mean keep by me do not leg it to that dog. work in progress. hope im using it right.

You of little faith, he recalled to the whistle whether he was meant to or not.

You have worked soo hard with him, and it really does show

Well done to both of you  :-*

just before he gets to the end of the lengthened lead i say keep by. sometimes then say good keep by, and he looks for treat or even comes to me for it even though i throw it out to him.

    yesterday was abit hairy.

saw a long haired gsd coming through trees at rec. max on heel, spotted but i thought not this time but had no choice. owner had dropped the lead and gsd cantered up with a growl and bossy body language. max waited for him with an oh dear feel to him. owner shouts ‘he just likes to say hello’!!!

trouble is max gets over his reticence and trys to sniff. gsd wont allow it and it escalates with max getting his front legs on gsd’s neck and gsd al over max quite roughly. this dog is still loose and max going ‘nah, you dont mean it’. owner gets hold of gsd seperate them and alfie long haired weimie arrives so she drops the lead again! got away as quick as i couuld but not without another mauling from gsd.

max was ‘not sure what that was all about but i enjoyed it’

deebee I’m sure you’ve had this issue with Max – re the mega different rections he gives other dogs at certain times – we were out with R in the park and he had a monkey on him… Anyway, he was greeting doggies nice and calmly, playing a bit, but nothing too boisterous… then he spotted a black lab that had dropped down on the path and was looking at him… trotted up nicely, had a face sniff, then lab got up and Rafe went MENTAL chasing it round, desperate to get on its back and hump it.  Was mortified as lab was haring away with its tail between its legs, and he was practically climbing on top of it as they ran.  Wouldn’t come back straight away, altho as soon as he stopped trying to climb on top, the lab turned round and play bowed, so was not toooo traumatised (thank doG).

So why the WEIRD overreaction to this one dog??  And is not the only time he’s overreacted to a greet – altho this was probably the worst I’ve seen him.

Oh, lab was male and I think neutered.  Youngish adult.

maybe the dog smells like a girl. side effect of neutering sometimes.

did you get the chance to ask if rafes reaction was unusual?  😀

today i saw a similar thing in that max went nuts to a particular dog. he was playing in the river with 3 other labs and was not being too in yer face with them. had recalled while running to another dog then later this young staffy girl off lead came along and he wouldnt leave her alone and got quite abit more hyper than usual. though he didnt do any hump stuff, he was also not trying to entice play. he was crazy for her smell.  had to go get him.

didnt get the chance to stand and chat lol but i would say she was not speyed.
