kerrie and stan
Membera few months ago stan started chasing the birds in the duck pond and started ignoring the recall also since the day i got him he has always been dog agressive but to varying degrees.
today however ;D we went out for our evening walk down the beach, there was another dog down there and it was barking at us from quite a distance away. we kept walking down the beach towards it, when we were about 6 foot away i recalled stan to heel and we walked past the dog still barking without insident ;D ;D considering stan used to go after any dog that barked at him i think that was good ;D also we walked past the duck pond without him chasing after the birds either.
i think i worked out the problem with the duck pond though, i wasnt comunicating with him enough for him to know what it was i wanted him to do.
i do have a question though… when we were walking past the dog stan didnt look at it however once we were pas it he zig zagged back with his head down to sniff it, the dog stopped barking at us as stan did this but did start barking again when stan turned back to follow me…. so was stan trying to appear friendly to the dog by zig zagging? and why did the other dog stop barking until stan turned back towards me?

Memberwhich part do you want to now if i cued?
with the dog i didnt actualy release him from the here (heel) comand, he just kind of drifted off then ignored my recall ::) and was so focused on the dog until i touched him on his back end to get his attention back on me then we carried on

Memberok…give me the whole scenario…from start to break off…as in from his point of view…what you were cueing and what / how you rewarding….
what is his recall cue
what is his heel cue
what is his release cueJune 5, 2009 at 9:44 am #73259kerrie and stan
Membersorry didnt reply sooner but my intenet has been down the past few days
his cues are:
come = recall
here = heel
foward = release
leave = leavewe got to beach and stan was given the ‘away’ cue so he went swimming in the sea, i saw dog further up beach but ignored it, as we got closer to other dog it started barking, stan looked but then ignored and carried on playing got a good scratch behind the ears, we got to about 10 foot away from dog then i cued ‘come’ and ‘here’ stan came and stayed to heel, pat on head and scratch behind ears, we walked withing a few feet of the dog still barking, stan stayed to heel, cued ‘here’ just as we got level to dog, as we went past stan drifted to towards dog, i cued ‘come’ stan ignored i called ‘stan come’ he ignored again and was sniffing other dog which had stopped barking, i walked upto stan and touched him then cued ‘here’ stan came away and dog started barking again, we walked into another section of the beach stan was given big big fuss then ‘foward’ cue and lots of play, we then did a few recalls to re-establish them after the two that were ignored.
i hope thats what you wanted ;D

Memberok….well first…never 2nd cue…the only thing you teach a dog by cueing twice is that he doesnt have to come the first time…..you should have fetched him and put him on leash….then done the re-enforcment of the recall after the dog had gone
you need to do a bit more of the best place to be…his heel and recall is not fluent enough…so i would get out there with some basic management training and up the reward from an ear scratch to a ball play or food treat…
