GuestHi all, :help:
we are new to this site hope someone can help… we have a rottweiler called roxy she will be 10 this year. She has problems with her joints which is under control at the moment due to weight loss and herbal tablets.
our problem now is the for the past week she wont eat her food?? she usually has dry complete food, with the occasional treat of liver or chicken. she has lost quite a bit of weight over the last couple of months she now weighs about 40k which the vets say they would like her to be in the high 30’s. she is still drinking and going to the toilet. she still enjoys her morning walk and the rest of the day she spends sleeping which isnt abnormal for her lol..
we are starting to worry about the food situation we have given her liver and chicken which she has been eating but after a visit to the vets on friday they said we should put her food down(dry food) and leave it they said she will not starve herself if the food is down!!!! im not so sure??
also we are going on holiday 2moro and hav a dog sitter. i dont know whats wrong with her but im so worried she wont eat while wer away. can anybody give us advice or anything please????worried rotty owners 🙂

MemberPresumably the vet has ruled out medical issues as being the source of her inappetance? If so, it may be that the recent hot weather has reduced the urge to eat. Or it could be that you are over anxious about her appetite which has then made her worried?

And now it sounds as she is holding out for something better 😉
It’s a mistake most of us make, the dog is not eating what we expect so we put tempting treats on top which the dog will eat. Then when it is given boring dry food again it waits to see if anything better is on offer.
What dry food is she on?
Have you thought of putting her on wet food like Chappie? she may be more interested in eating that.April 28, 2009 at 2:26 pm #86798Anonymous
GuestThanks for all your replys, from a pup she was on bakers complete i know not the best! up until about a year ago then the vets said she had to loose weight to help with her joints so we switched to the hills J/D mix especially for joints etc… but at £70 a month it was too much so we looked for an alternative which was more or less the same this was a senior large breed mix from pets at home we gave her that and for one months supply she was fine, but when we bought another bag she refused to eat it, we then tried dog food meat from a tin which she ate a little but not much we have also tried frolic and back to bakers but still nothing!! also she usually loves pigs ears but wont touch them either.. what else can i try?? :help:
back in january she was at the vets for a poorly elbow (arthrtis) not sure ive spelt that right.. they put her to sleep and took fluid from the joint to rule out cancer etc… they gave her rimydl for her elbow plus she takes a herbal tablet called seriquin. during this vet visit they checked her organs etc and said for her age she was in good health apart from arthertis. so when we returned to vets this time withe her not eating the vet checked her temp it was 39.5 she said it was a little high im not sure what it should be then the vet said all we can do is run some tests on her liver and kidneys. im not sure whether to do these test because she just had them in jan..
could she deteriorate so quickly??
we explained to the vets about our holiday and she said to first try a hills senior large breed dry food complete which we bought it would be £46 for the month which i thought was reasonable.so now as we go on holiday 2moro should i take her back to the vets for the tests when we get back?
does anybody have an older dog that wont eat? maybe like u say im being too anxious about her eating, im used to put her food down and she gulps it straight away..
thanks in advance & sorry for the rambling.
Gemma 🙂

MemberHas she had her teeth check also is she still on Rymadel, Rotties are not known for their delicate eating habits they usually inhale food, as she has always been an eater I would think something is not right.
Or it could be you making her stress over food if she is pooing she must be eating something which makes me think something is wrong

Guesthiya, she is no longer on the rymidl. she just takes the seriquin. the vet didnt check her teeth but im not sure the problem lies there as she will eat some foods like liver chicken rice but not her biscuits. im thinking its maybe her age but im still concerned. i think i will take her back to the vets after our holiday so will keep you all updated.
what do you guys feed your dogs? what breed are they?
Thanks i think il be a daily user of this site lol

Liver and chicken are soft, biscuits are hard – if she has a sore tooth she won’t want to bite down on it 😉

MemberIf she was mine at her age id be taking her back to vets for full blood works. Better to have it done and rule out that – than wait incase its just her being fussy, you can sort her being fussy – once you have asceratined its nothing medical 🙂

GuestHi all,
Just to let u know about roxy. We arrived home from holiday yesturday roxy had stayed at home and a family member moved in with her while we were away. unfortunately she still didnt eat so when we got back we took her to the vets and the vet said she had lost vasts amounts of weight which we knew she was very thin, the vet said she could run blood test but she thought if they did find anything wrong at her age there wouldnt be a lot they could do. she had only been for a poo twice in 16days. The vet said its most probably some sort of cancer and the best thing would be to put her to sleep. so we had to do what was best for roxy and we had her put to sleep this morning. Were goin to miss her like mad but we know it was for the best. thanks for the replies though.
You never know we might be back.
Goodbye for now
