Picky eater, selective pooper and peepee?

I must say, he is a cutie & I’m normally not a fan of small dogs (certain Divas & Pekes excluded  :-*)

Dogs do not eat everyday in the wild & he is unlikely to willingly “starve” himself because he is not being fed the way he wants.

Jake gets his breakfast at 8 A.M and his main meal at 6 P.M, the food is left down for 10/20 minutes & if he doesn’t eat it then it gets picked back up and he doesn’t get it, end of story.
You are pack manager and the pack managers dictate when the pack members do and do not eat.

I also find it strange that you have to syringe him to get him to drink  :-\ I’m assuming he doesn’t want to drink because he is not thirsty so why force him to drink? He’ll be getting sufficient moisture from his food so he is not likely to suddenly dehydrate because he’s not drinking his water all the time. I could be wrong on this though..

I think all this messing with his food schedules and water could be the reason why is bowels are all “off” if he’s been checked and there’s no medical reason for it. Are you following a breed specific diet sheet for him?

You shouldnt need to clean his teeth, you seem to be feeding good food stuffs, get him a couple of bones and let him chew them, they will keep his teeth clean. Do you take his food away after 10 mins if he doesnt eat it , if not try that, then put more down next meal time, give 10 mins if not eaten remove and so on, he will eat eventually and def wont starve to death ::) Is him pooing on the balcony a big problem for you? I know you dont have a garden so maybe this is better for you, bag it & bin it straight away.
my friends dog will not poo anywhere else but his own garden.

No, I only syringe water him if we are out and he is sweating with his tongue hanging to the floor lol. I should have said that. Normally he drinks, not a lot but he drinks.  I follow breed diet BUT the breed diet is what he turns his silly nose up at. he has been a problem eater from the first day, and it seems he will be so for the rest of his life.

He gets his food, if he wont eat it TUFF luck. some weeks before I was spoon feeding becuase the breeder said he will DIE if he misses two meals. LOL he never showed signs of being starved. When he is hungry, he eats up a storm, but usually only once a day will he eat a big serving of anything. he hates all dog foods. So I have to get him back on his food, but this is what he will not eat. Oh well. He is just spoilt silly and it is all my fault >:D

No, the pooing on the balcony is not a big problem as it is a small area and I sanitize it daily. The problem is he wont pee there, becuase at first he was doing it, then I started to close the door when I took him out to pee now he cries to come back in and then PEES on the floor LOL.

I want him to pee and poop outside in the street and nearby park unless the weather is so horrible I cant get him out, like during torrential rains and winter storms. But if he continues to only poo on the balcony he will never be broken to do it outside including parks etc p:-)

So what I am asking is how to I unbreak his bancony habit :-\

As for the balcony thing.. Does he give you signs etc when he wants to go to the toilet? Like cry at the balcony doors or something?

He GOES out int he balcony alone by himself when he wants to go, I never have to take him. He will be playing ont he other end of the flat and all of a sudden I hear the little tinkle bell tinkling away and off he goes to the balcony so he does it alone. If I put paper near the balcony door he will pee there, but not always as he found my rug much more plush >:(, but poo, always runs out, if the door is closed which it is sometimes, he just sits and waits for me to open it

Yes, I was giving him raw frozen marrow bones which he literally went nuts for but I stopped a week now to bring his constipation back to normal. His Anal glands got clogged fromt he soft food he was eating before I took him for the overhaul at the vet, they were drained and vet recommended home cook for two weeks. This is week two. Dont know if I will continue it totally as I feel what I am giving him is not sufficient nutrients I think, but may be wrong :-\

Watch for signals that he wants to go out and then try to get him outside in time or take him out every 20 minutes or so and when he does have a poo/pee praise him and treat him as he’s doing so.

LOL take him out every 20 minutes? He pees on average every two waking hours, and since he sleeps like 3 to 4 hour intervals I take him out upon rising, or after a long hard play or eating. But since he is giving so much trouble to eat I usually take him to the park nearby and run him good, but even then he wont poo or pee. he does not seem to pee that much. At first he was doing it like every 30 mins now I timed every couple waking hours. Poo is about two times to three max a day >:D

What do you say when he goes wee/poo on the balcony? You need to cue it so when you are out you can cue him to go  🙂 Like “go wee” and “go poo”  🙂

I reckon ‘go poop’ or ‘go pee pee’ is more American  🙂

but then the words don’t matter do they – just the fact that you have a cue  ;D

labattsbaby – i agree with Balmy – this is what I do with my puppy (he 9 months old now tho  😮 ) and he will go on command.

I usually say go peeppee to pee and go poopoo to poop, usually with the poo he goes, but now I WANT to break this bad habit as it is not good, what if he has to stay with someone and they have no balcony. he has to learn to go on the street and park area near my house. He did it this morning on the corner grass lot. Then I fed him and stupid me, didnt expect him to go 30 mins again, then he POOPED in my bedroom >:(, but I take blame for that.

I have also noticed in his sleeping area which is the laundry room which is fairly good size for his small size, he has not poo or pee on the paper and puppy toilet again for almost a week, which means what? He does not see that as a place to eliminate anymore?
