    whats a sputum test

When a doctor does a sputum test on you he gets you to cough and spit into a dish 😉 it’s a way of checking for infection in the lungs

    #81705

oooo so how would you do that to a dog?

well the old fashioned way was bronchoalveolar lavage ….but times move on…think they aspirate the tubes nowadays  🙂

    #81709

oh right, no they didnt say anything about doing that

ok i heard from the insurance today and they are paying out :ok: so stan is now booked in to have x-rays and blood test done on monday

but i have a question :help:
when i spoke to the practice they said that they will need to keep him in most of the day for him to have his pre meds and so that they can keep an eye on him for his anestetic (sp)

    now

stan gets very stressed at the vets (to the point were i have to trim his nails at home cos he wont let them near him) so i would be happier (and he wouldnt be as stressed) if i stayed with him until he went under but the reseptionist said that they cant do that.

    now

should i push for them to allow him to remain with me or risk leaving him there and him possibly either being muzled :boooo: :nono: or biting someone ???

Don’t ask tell them you are staying for the pre-meds  :ok: you would not be able to stay until the GA as that would mean you would A. Be in the way and B. Have to scrub in.
Once he’s had his PM he will be fine  :ok: and don’t forget you will pass on your stress to him so shoulders back straight breath deepand no messing

ok thanks val, its just i know whats he like with vets and i can see him nipping when they try and put the needle in

    #81713

I agree with Val, when Toby had his skin scrape I insisted I walk him through to the examination room and then I wanted to stay for the scrape, well like it or not I was like a mother hen and he definately picked up on it.  When he had the light test for ringworm I left him to it and it was much better for both of us.  Good luck big lad  :-*

Just a question, is it a big job the x-rays and the bloods, just wasn’t sure if it’d need to be under GA?

They will need to put him out for the ex-ray you have to have a really calm well trained dog to do ex-rays without Oh and a good vet

    #81715

:ok: i will do that and let you know how it goes

    #81716

honestly kerrie he’ll be better than you think beau is dredful with strangers but he was absolutely fine when he had to stay in the vets, twice now one for bloods the other for his roundies removal…and he was really calm when i went back, no muzzle or anything, if you stay til he’s had his premed so he is relaxed (and you stay relaxed) he’ll be fine after that  :ok: good luck to you both with the tests hope you can get sorted
