Struvite crystals

The flattie bitch I walk had had a recurrent urine infection that was diagnosed as struvite crystals last week.  The vet wants her to go on a prescription diet but her owner is reluctant to put her on it  :). I’m going to put them some info together on raw feeding, I’ve read that the diet needs to be acidic but what are the best foods for this?

Tam’s sister was on the prescription diet and ballooned on it even when they cut the portion of food down to next to nothing so if there is another way……..

Good for the owner fist of all there is no need to change a dogs diet because of crytals ( Although I would say fresh is best and a far more natural dog diet) the problem is that I bet there has been no culture done on this dog.
To diagnose a bladder infection, you need to perform a test known as a urine culture.
This should be done in combination with a sensitivity test to determine what antibiotics will be effective against the bacteria. It’s helpful also to do a urinalysis, but you cannot diagnose a bladder infection, nor effectively treat it, with urinalysis alone the vet will need to know what AB to give the dog the reason it comes back is because the dog is not getting the right treatment so after time the bacteria builds up again.
Struvite crystals can come and go in a dog some have them some do not but the root of this dogs problem is the wrong diagnoses has been made because of short cuts which in the long run costs the owner more both in trips to the vets and in vets food if the vet kills the bacteria with the RIGHT AB it may never come back again in the life of this dog but it has to be done with first a culture so the AB is the right one.

PPS Its the bacteria that is upsetting the PH and making the crystals not the diet.

Thanks everyone, interesting stuff.  She’s had a second test and they found nothing, so all is well.  They’re going to change her diet anyway which is even better  🙂

Okaaay so, Erin’s been incontinent again recently.  She’s been on cranberry tablets, filtered water, parsley etc and all urine tests are clear.  The vet has come up with she has too much vulva on account of being spayed early.  When it was pointed out to the vet that their practice pushed to get her spayed at 8months, she said it was swings and roundabouts!  ::)

So, she thinks the urine is pooling in the loose skin of her vulva and leaking out intermittently.  She says there’s an op she can have to tighten it up, similar to eye tacking  :-\ Who’d have thought, designer vaginas for dogs!  😀

This is a classic of what I have always said the vets say spay money for them then they make money for life out of food cos the dogs fat, skin,and girlie bits.
Sounds like a leaky bladder to me have they tried propylene
